| Causes of peritoneal mesothelioma
|
An overexposure to asbestos is almost always the cause of malignant mesothelioma. Same is the case with the peritoneal form of mesothelioma. In the case of peritoneal mesothelioma the asbestos fiber is lodged inside the mesothelial cells covering the abdominal region. Exactly how they reach there is a matter of debate. There are two theories that try to explain the presence of asbestos in the peritoneal region. One theory states that the asbestos is directly ingested into the peritoneal region through the digestive organs. Whereas according to the other theory the asbestos particles are inhaled and are transported to the peritoneal membrane through the lymphatic system.
Once asbestos particle reach the abdominal region, it becomes impossible for the body to get rid of them. Inside the peritoneal region they start interfering with the working of the mesothelial cells. How exactly they influence the working of the mesothelial cells is still a mystery but according to some conjectures they lead to long term inflammation as well as irritation which ultimately lead to the cancerous formation of the mesothelial cells. Once these cells become cancerous they start growing without any restraint or regulation which ultimately leads to the bloating of the mesothelium. Over a period of time these cells keep multiplying and lead to the formation of tumors.
